The Committee talked about looking at a text that could be used for the both the FYE and LAC Writing (ENG 151 Academic Writing) courses. Lori Baker brought texts, mainly English handbooks, to share, including those by Hacker, Rames, Williams, and Graff, Birkenstein & Durst. She also shared Hjorshojs Transition to College Writing. All agreed that we also should be mindful of possible online sources, as cost always is an issue for students. The Committee then moved to a discussion about whether to include Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MTC) goals on the FYE Course proposal form. There also were questions raised about meeting the MTC Global and Diversity Goals within the LAC. As a member of the LAC Transformation Committee, Dr. Kramer shared concerns to be raised with LACOB about LAC outcomes for ethical judgment and moral reasoning being combined on the LAC course proposal form with the outcome for practicing responsible citizenship. Discussion ensued about whether the outcomes should be divided by the word or and listed together on one form, or whether two forms should be used to list each outcome. Several Committee members indicated this issue had been discussed at an Assembly meeting last spring. It was suggested that the Committee refer to the minutes to see if they may provide for clarification of the issue. Lyn Brodersen further indicated that Dr. Kramer had expressed concern over the previous construction of mathematical/logical being changed to, mathematical and logical in one of the outcomes on an LAC course proposal form. Maria Brandt indicated she would make the change immediately on the form. Corey Butler asked for feedback on the First-Year Experience Course Guidelines document he had prepared and sent to the Committee for review this week. A discussion of the Guidelines broad approach and Critical Thinking Rubric followed. The Committee will consider student progress headings above each outcome of the Critical Thinking Rubric that read, respectively, Beginning, Developing, Practicing, and Accomplished, or some other terminology that reflects Wolcotts ordering, but removes pejorative elements of her labels for student progress. The Committee reviewed the Information Literacy Rubric attached to the course Guidelines as well. The FYE Course Guidelines will continue to evolve as the Committee prepares the FYE Course for Curriculum Committee review over the coming weeks. The Committee discussed bringing Susan Wolcott, who hosted the November 14 Critical Thinking Workshop, back to campus in the spring. Several Committee members suggested that Dr. Wolcott would be able to provide training in Critical Thinking for those instructors who will teach the FYE Course. Lori Baker suggested that the Committee develop a skeleton course outline for the FYE Course, to be shared with potential instructors. Such an outline should be available with a list of possible resources (suggested websites, texts, supplemental readings, etc.) and some kind of a course assessment tool. Vaughn Gehle suggested a common course evaluation (from which aggregate data only would be extracted for course assessment), along with entry- and exit-level student assessments of some type. Butler suggested that we may want to consider using the same or similar entry- and exit-level assessments for the Contemporary Issues Seminar. Clearly, however, we will need further discussion of what assessment tools might be used in both/either of the courses, as well as how those tools might be developed. Lori Baker then shared the materials for discussion of the newly-proposed English core course, ENG 151, Academic Writing. The Committee reviewed the course overview, sample outlines, and writing rubric. After discussion, Baker moved and Butler seconded to move the ENG 151 package to the Curriculum Committee. The Committee voted unanimously to move the ENG 151 proposal, with all appropriate forms, to the Curriculum Committee for review. Lyn Brodersen brought the issue of IDST 110, The University Experience, to the Committees attention. Recently, staff in the Academic and Diversity Resources Department brought to her attention that this course traditionally has been used as the First-Year Experience course for provisionally-admitted students and student athletes. Brodersen asked the Committee to consider this issue for discussion at the next meeting: should IDST 110 be used as an appropriate substitute for the FYE Course? Also for consideration: if IDST 110 is a substitute for the FYE course, should MSUSAASF faculty teach the IDST 110 course only? Or would they also be allowed to teach sections of the FYE Course? The Committee adjourned at 10:00 am. The LAC Oversight Body will meet again on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at 8:30 am in BA 524.
